MUERTE’- DOUBLE! shouted Rene, my birdboy, as a puff of feathers appeared and my second barrel went off. The smoke hung in the air. The two doves folded. They were high birds, and right behind them was another group, and behind them yet another. This was incredible! Watch a video of our hunt.
As fast as you wanted to go, the birds kept coming. I had only been at my designated shooting spot for about an hour and had already seen thousands of birds. It was our first full day. A large field of bright sunflowers in front of me and the hills behind me harboring the largest roost in Cordoba Province, and February weather had most of the group hunting in short sleeves and shorts. The ten minute drive from the lodge after a hearty breakfast was punctuated by everyones comments on the huge and seemingly never ending stream of doves at every height and in every direction.
Our first shoot was increadable! Our second was at a completely different spot, but also just a five minute drive from the lodge. For the first timers it was awe inspiring, for those who had been here before, it was like a new experience!
Birdshooting is a very deep passion of mine and of course at the other end of the spectrum is big game, however it's something that truly gets me going!!!
Just like in the realms of big game shooting, as you drill down into the layers of “who's who” there are certain names that keep coming to the top and ceratin reasons for that – that leads to the question – what makes Los Chanares different?
The major difference between Los Chanares and the other outfitters in Cordoba is that they own their own estate and have several thousand acres including the largest roost in the area right on their property. This means that their crop rotation, water management, and shooting is all within their control.
No long drives – In fact, many of the shoots are within a ten minute walk.
They offer a choice of shooting difficulty. Depending on where they put you, it can be easy with high volume, challenging, or even areas for the most accomplished wingshooter. Martin Carranza, the wildlife manager, has developed over 40 shooting locations, each capable of having a whole group.Your shooting spots are carefully chosen based on current flight lines and shot presentation. Scouts report the changes in flight patterns on a daily basis. All this ensures that you will never shoot at the same location twice and there is no such thing as a quiet day at Los Chanares! If you desire, you will be shooting constantly while in the field.
After an incredible action packed morning shoot we were ready for a break. We were greeted back at the lodge with cool wet towels and then seated at our lunch table under some shade trees right in front of the lodge. Over the next hour plate after plate of incredible argentinian beef, the finest of red wine, and an assortment of fresh salads kept appearing. Jessica, formerly the owner of a high end restaurant in Buenos Aires, truly has a passion for food presentation and variety.
Each day we enjoyed a couple hours of siesta between shoots; be it at the pool, in a hammock, or one of the well appointed living areas. A library of magazines and shooting journals made for some interesting reading and by the time the fresh coffee appeared at 3.30 we were all rearing to go again.
After two or three outings the shooting averages started to rise. Then that afternoon as I walked between the shooting spots visiting, chatting and generally trying to shoot as many of someone elses birds as possible, I wondered to myself, is there a more fun way to spend time with a group of friends? In most hunting situations, two is great, three becomes crowded and four is a deal breaker. We were a group of eleven, shooting side by side with each other, sharing stories, trying to shoot the highest birds, and genuinly having a time that can truly be described as epic!
The kind of people that will travel to hunt are a special breed and whether its people you arrived with or people you met at the lodge you are bound to make some firm friends at Los Chanares.
